The rest of the year

Two of the women featured in the ABWA calendar, shellfisherwoman O’Hara Martin and stable owner Micki Quinn, were not able to be profiled for this issue due to the seasonal nature of their jobs. They do provide added dimension to the breadth of fields embodied by the calendar subjects.

Martin represents the significant, although decreasing, number of Cape Codders involved in the fishing and shellfishing industries. What was once second only to tourism is now a smaller, yet still crucial, force. Of her work, Martin said, “I love the independence and the solitude. The Cape has given me the freedom to work with what is natural, ever-changing and beautiful.”

Quinn, whose Black Stand Stable offers boarding and riding services, is an example of the many recreational activities offered on the Cape. From horses to bike rentals, visitors and locals provide a steady clientele for these outdoor adventures. Her words ring true, no matter the industry: “Be passionate about what you do – but don’t work so hard that you lose sight of the passion.”
