Arts & Artisans Trails of Cape Cod now available
The first edition of a new four-color guidebook titled “The Arts & Artisans Trails of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket” is now available for sale to the public. The guidebook provides readers with self-guided driving and walking itineraries to an array of artists, artisans’ studios and galleries outside of the mainstream and off the beaten path.

Following the trails in this book will introduce you to unique characters – people who love what they do and love sharing their work with visitors. There is the husband and wife team whose gallery doubles as an ecological statement; it is literally underground. There is an Italian candle maker trained in the art of ceramics and a Swedish-born woman who transfers watercolors into textile designs. Meet a woman of Wampanoag ancestry who crafts jewelry out of wampum and a Yarmouthport woman who has mastered the historic craft of making sailor’s valentines. You will find a pewter crafter, a quilt-maker and a decoy-carver. There are basket-makers, glass-blowers and potters. Explore and discover a very different Cape Cod.

Guides are available for purchase for $13.95 in many local bookstores and at the visitor centers of the Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Island Chambers of Commerce, or buy it online at www.CapeCodChamber.org.

RHCI gains key accreditation for stroke care
The Rehabilitation Hospital of the Cape and Islands is the first hospital in the Northeast and one of only five nationwide to be designated as a Stroke Specialty Program by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.

CARF reported exemplary conformance to practice standards in 10 categories, five of which relate to RHCI’s stroke program, including its education and prevention programs, its investment in technologies to stroke rehabilitation care and its Stroke Peer Visitation Program.

“It’s very meaningful for us as caregivers that CARF recognized the collaborative efforts of our staff in making enhancements to our stroke program,” said David M. Lowell, M.D., RHCI’s medical director and a board-certified neurologist. “It’s even more important for those who need rehabilitation after stroke to know this level of care is available right here on the Cape.”

CARF has a 40-year history of setting standards of practice for providers of medical rehabilitation facilities. In June 2005, CARF released new standards for accrediting Stroke Specialty Programs that would go into effect in January 2006. RHCI was among the first hospitals in the country to request and go through the process.
